Peer Review Process

Nesne Journal of Psychology is a peer-reviewed journal. Research articles, review articles and case reports undergo double-anonymous peer review: reviewers do not know the identity of the authors, and authors do not know the identity of the reviewers. Book reviews, interviews and letters to the editor are assessed by the editorial office, with external review where needed.

Stages

  1. Submission. The manuscript is submitted through the journal system as an anonymized main text, with a separate Title Page and Author Declaration Form.
  2. Initial screening (up to 4 weeks). The editor checks fit with the scope, compliance with the author guidelines, anonymization, the similarity report, ethics approval information and the required statements. Manuscripts that are not suitable are rejected with reasons or returned to the authors for correction. Suitable manuscripts are assigned to a field editor.
  3. Reviewer assignment. The field editor invites at least two reviewers with expertise in the topic and from different institutions.
  4. Peer review (4 weeks). Reviewers respond to the invitation within 7 days and complete their review within 4 weeks using the online Reviewer Evaluation Form.
  5. Decision. The field editor assesses the reports and makes a recommendation to the Editor-in-Chief, who makes the final decision. The decision may be accept, minor revision, major revision or reject; it is sent to the authors with reasons and the reviewer reports.
  6. Revision. Authors submit the revised manuscript with a response letter that addresses each change point by point. As a rule, the revision is sent to the reviewers who assessed the first version. No more than two rounds of revision are allowed.
  7. Acceptance and publication. Accepted manuscripts are checked for language and format, the authors sign the Copyright and Licence Agreement, the typeset proof is sent to the authors and the article is published with a DOI in the first available issue.

Disagreement between reviewers

If the two reviewers' recommendations differ substantially, the field editor invites a third reviewer, or the Editor-in-Chief makes the decision and explains the reasons to the authors.

Reviewer selection and conflicts of interest

A person who works at the same institution as an author, has co-authored with an author in the last three years, is an author's thesis supervisor or student, or has any other competing interest in the manuscript is not invited to review it. Authors may suggest reviewers at submission and may ask, with reasons, that particular people not review their work. The editor is not bound by these suggestions, and no manuscript is reviewed only by reviewers suggested by the authors.

Review reports

Reviewers assess supplementary files (data, materials, additional tables) as well as the main text. Review reports are not published and reviewers' identities are kept confidential. Reports and review records are retained for at least five years after publication. Reviewers' responsibilities are set out in the Reviewer Guidelines.

Manuscripts by editors and board members

Manuscripts by editors and board members are reviewed through the same process and handled by an editor with no conflict of interest; an editor who is an author has no access to the review records of their own manuscript (see Publication Policy).

Special issues

Articles in special issues go through the same process and are reviewed by at least two external reviewers.

No guaranteed acceptance

The journal does not guarantee acceptance or a publication date to any author, and no fee is charged for review.

Appeals

Authors may appeal a rejection once (see Appeals and Complaints).

Acknowledging reviewers

Reviewers receive a certificate of reviewing on request. At the end of each year, the names and institutions of the reviewers who served that year are published on the journal website.
