Abstract
Although the important effects of parental involvement on child development are known, the need for comprehensive measurements continues. The current study aimed to develop a measurement tool that can distinguish between weekdays and weekends and includes behavioral and emotional parental involvement behaviors. For this purpose, 325 mothers and fathers whose children were attending preschool or kindergarten were studied. In addition to the demographic information form, parents also filled out the Father Involvement Scale to verify the criterion validity of the scale. The Parental Involvement Scale, developed by following the scale development stages, was validated with 36 items in four sub-dimensions (caregiving, emotional support, cognitive engagement, warnings and rules), including behavioral and emotional main dimensions. Reliability findings showed that the internal consistency in Cronbach Alpha and one-month test-retest reliability of the scale items were within acceptable limits. The study contributes to the literature on parenting in early childhood by providing a comprehensive and valid scale that can assess parental involvement. In future studies, differences in parental gender that can be obtained from the sub-dimensions of the scale may be useful for interventions aimed at increasing parental involvement.
