Kardeşlik ilişkisi, yakınlık, koruma, sosyal deneyimleri beraber edinmenin yanı sıra kıskançlık, çekişme, rekabet, düşmanlık gibi farklı duyguların bir arada deneyimlendiği, statik olmayan bireyler arasında olabilecek en yakın, yoğun ve uzun ilişki olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Sözü edilen bu deneyim ve duyguların görünümünün gelişim dönemlerine bağlı olarak farklılaştığı ifade edilebilir. Ailede otizm gibi hayatın birçok alanında etkileri gözlemlenen bir bozukluğu olan üyenin varlığı anne babayla beraber sağlıklı gelişen kardeşlerin yaşamında da yoğun bir etki yaratır. Otizm tanılı bir kardeşe sahip olmanın sağlıklı gelişen kardeşler açısından hem kardeş ilişkisinin niteliği bakımından hem de psikolojik açıdan olumlu veya olumsuz yönde daha farklı etkilerinin olması beklenir. Bu derlemenin amacı da alan yazında sağlıklı kardeşlerin otizm tanılı kardeşleriyle olan ilişkileri ve çeşitli psikolojik özelliklerinin incelendiği çalışmaların gözden geçirilmesi ve bu konuya ilişkin yapılan çalışmaların bütüncül olarak ortaya konmasıdır. Otizm tanılı kardeşe sahip olmak sağlıklı olan çocuk açısından gerek kardeş ilişkisinde gerekse de psikolojik uyum bakımından farklı sonuçlar doğurmaktadır.
