Ergenlik dönemindeki bireyler vakitlerinin büyük bir bölümünü çeşitli medya yayınları karşısında geçirmektedir. Filmler, televizyon, internet ve müzik klipleri gibi medya yayınlarında ise cinsel içerikli sunumlar yaygın bir biçimde gösterilebilmektedir. Bu yayınların izlenmesi ergenlerin erken yaşta cinsel ilişkiye girmesine, cinsel açıdan riskli davranışlarda bulunmasına, ergen hamileliklerine, erken yaşta alkol kullanımına, cinsellikle ilgili kalıp-yargıların beslenmesine, tecavüz mitlerinin kabulüne ve cinsellikle ilgili olumlu beklentilerin güçlenmesine yol açabilmektedir. Medyada sunulan cinsel içerikli yayınların ergenler üzerindeki etkilerini azaltmanın pek çok yolu bulunmaktadır. Bu yollardan bazıları anne-baba medya düzenlemeleri, koruyucu sembollerin kullanımı ve medya okur-yazarlığı eğitimidir. Yapılan çalışmalar anne-babalar tarafından kullanılan kısıtlayıcı düzenlemelerin bir noktaya kadar olumlu sonuç verdiğini göstermektedir. Koruyucu semboller ise ebeveynler açısından kullanışlı olsalar dahi ergenlerde psikolojik tepkiselliğe yol açabilmekte ve umulanın aksine bir sonuç verebilmektedir. Buna karşın, medyada sunulan cinsel içerikli yayınlarla ilgili medya okur-yazarlığı eğitimlerinin olumlu etkisi pek çok çalışmayla ortaya konmuştur. Bu derleme çalışmasında anne-babalar, politika yapıcılar ve bu alanda çalışmak isteyen araştırmacılara bilgi ve öneriler sunulmuştur.
