1707853934 Parenting in a Digital Society: A Comparative Study on the Values Attributed to Children

This study investigates the impact of parents' social media use on children's values in the digital world and examines how this impact changes in psychological, economic/utilitarian, and social/traditional dimensions. A total of 241 parents participated in the study and 63 of them were social media influencers (phenomenon parents). In the data collection process, Demographic Information Form, Child's Value Scale and Parents' Future Expectations from Children Scale were used. In the study, the relationships between the groups were evaluated with t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and the relationship between education and the value of children was analyzed with Pearson correlation coefficients. The results show that as the education level of the parents increases, the psychological, economic/utilitarian, and social/traditional values decrease. This finding contradicts the general trends in the literature. In the analyses with phenomenon and non-phenomenon parents, no significant differences were found between the values given to the child and future expectations. However, it was found that especially non-phenomenon fathers were more likely than mothers to place economic/utilitarian and social/traditional values. In addition, phenomenon fathers also emphasized social/traditional value more than mothers. These results provide important clues to understand how parents' reasons for having children and their values affect their use of the digital world and social media.
