1690533343 The Effect of Femicides on Women in The Context of Sexism, Affection and Trauma

The aim of the research is to reveal how femicides affect women with an experimental method on the axis of affect, sexism and trauma. For this purpose, 96 women ages of 18-35 participated to the study. In the laboratory, Ambivalent Sexism Scale(ASS), Positive and Negative Affect Scale(PANAS), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist(PTSDCL), and State Anger Scale(SAS) were presented to participants. After a 48-hours, participants were exposed to a video of femicides at the labrotary. Then the PTSDCL, ASS, SAS, and PANAS scales were represented to participants. Since pre-test and post-test design conducted, t-test analysis was used for dependent groups as a statistical method. Findings were examined, the state anger, benevolent sexism and negative emotion scores of the participants increased significantly after the video manipulation. The positive emotion and hostile sexism scores of the participants decreased significantly. Negative affect and anger are discussed as a source of motivation for women's participation in the feminist movement against femicide. As a result, increasing the place of femicides in the media has been found considerably important. The increase in negative affect and anger was interpreted as a potential motivator for women to join the feminist movement in response to femicides. While the decrease in hostile sexism suggests stronger solidarity among women, the increase in benevolent sexism was interpreted as an indication that women may still rely on patriarchal systems for seeking help and protection against violence.
