Abstract
According to literature and clinical observations, there are some similarities and differences between social anxiety disorder (SAD) and vulnerable narcissism but on this topic, there exist only limited number of research. Thus, in the current study, it is aimed to investigate similarities and differences in terms of perceived parenting and compensation focused coping styles among groups with low, moderate and high levels of SAD and vulnerable narcissism. Parallel with the aim of the study, 357 participants were examined in terms of their SAD and vulnerable narcissism symptom levels and they divided into three groups such as high, moderate and low level of symptom level groups in accordance with their SAD and vulnerable narcissism symptoms. Then, the groups were examined in terms of their perceived parenting and compensation focused coping styles. According to the results of the study, it was found that whereas perceived parenting styles that were related to SAD are belittling mother and father, overprotective mother and father, and permissive father, the parenting styles that were related to vulnerable narcissism are controlling mother, belittling mother and punitive mother. Moreeover, people with high level of vulnerable narcisisim tended to use all compensation focused parenting styles, on the other hand people with high level of SAD tended to use over critical/entitlement coping style when compared to their low symptom level counterparts. The findings of the study were discussed in the light of the literature.
